About the Estero Market Estero is located in a growing neighborhood in south Lee County. Located between Naples and Fort Myers, this area has seen significant development because of its location between these two cities. Florida Gulf Coast University is located nearby, which adds to the marketability of properties in this area. Interstate I-75 and Tamiami Trail (US41) bracket the area, providing the main traffic arteries for north-south travel. Primary commercial development is along Tamiami Trail and at the Interstate 75 inter changes. It is the home of Germain Arena, which hosts the home games for the Florida Everblades ECHL hockey team and the Florida Firecats football team. Florida Gulf Coast University is also located in Estero. Historically and culturally, the heart of Estero is the spring-fed Estero River, which flows to Estero Bay. Some of the earliest European settlers of the area (notably the Alvarez, Fernandez, Johnson, and Soto families) were fishing families that lived on Mound Key, a mangrove-ringed island that dominates Estero Bay. During the early 20th century, these families moved upriver to the settlement which came to be known as Estero. Estero is also the location of a utopian community called the Koreshan Unity, which is now preserved as the Koreshan State Historic Site. Until the 1970's, most settlement and development in Estero was near the river. Estero has a large portion of the recent development that has occurred over the past few years in Lee County. With just a few scattered areas of older and historic homes, a greater ratio of communities have just been established, with several still underway. This is a mixed housing area. Some properties offer access to the Estero River, which leads into Estero Bay and then to the Gulf of Mexico for boating recreation. Other residences here are resort style golf communities, upscale condominium projects, and various quiet neighborhoods. The general vicinity has seen a dramatic change, where fields of animals grazing have become both residential homes and oversize shopping plazas. Communities and Developments Belle
